This is the most recent yet probably the largest and undoubtedly the most interesting Museumsin Hanoi and Vietnam. The Museum comes out of the recognition that Vietnam is a multi-ethnic country and that more attention should be paid to promote socio-cultural diversity. Despite being out of the way compared with other museums in Hanoi, Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is worth a thorough visit, for those who are keen to learn about the multiculturality of Vietnam and for those who would appreciate some green space.

There are both indoors and outdoors section. While the in-housed exhibition is particularly informative, the outdoors display and activities make the museum stand out from the rest. There are a number of houses modeling after the traditional architecture of ethnic minorities, especially those who live in Northern and Central highlands.

You will be blown away by the elaboration of these architectures, at the same time being thoroughly engaged in traditional games and activities such as water puppet show, calligraphy, stone game (O An Quan). The museum is especially a great choice for those who cannot find time to visit all remote areas where live the majority of Vietnam ethnic minorities.

Formerly known as Bachthao Gardens, Hanoi Zoo is home to about 800 animals with over 90 different species on exhibition, including big cats, monkeys and reptiles. The zoo is located within Thu Le Park – a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of Hanoi central.

The zoo is striving to improve facilities and expertise to bring it on par with other zoos throughout the world and is currently undergoing a conservation-and-breeding programme of animals from Vietnam and other destinations believed to be under threat. The animals on display are located throughout the park meaning you can enjoy the landscaped surroundings as you visit the zoo. There is also a fun park for kids located close by. Hanoi Zoo is located a short taxi ride northeast of the main Hanoi centre.

Animals on display at Hanoi Zoo include a variety of native species such as the Vietnam pheasant displayed with information signs in Vietnamese, English and French. The star exhibit is Lam Nhi or ‘baby of the forest’ – a tiger who was rescued after being taken from the jungle to be sold for its skin. A local competition was held to name the tiger with over 10,000 school children submitting entries; today the celebrity tiger attracts many visitors. Other big cats on display include the Indochinese tiger, Siberian tiger and clouded leopard.

There are also plenty of monkeys including lots of gibbons swinging from ropes and tyres in a specially built monkey enclosure. Asian elephants are present on the edge of the lake and there is also a small aquarium with turtles and tropical fish. Families visiting Hanoi Zoo can take a rest in a shaded picnic area, kids will also enjoy a spin on the lake in a swan peddle boat. When you’ve finished browsing round the zoo and surrounding gardens you can stop by the souvenir store and purchase an ornamental plant such as a bonsai tree.

Much of the emphasis at the zoo is based on gathering knowledge rather than care for the animals so do be warned that the cages will be smaller than those you might see at other zoos. Conditions however are improving and are certainly better than some of those found at neighbouring Asian zoos.

If you go there with only 1 partner, then it should only cost you 200,000 VND at most to eat to satiety. People in Lò Đúc are specialised in grilled Vietnamese Street Food and normally from August to December, the street is full of guests because of cold weather which makes the food is even better.

Even though it is known that using stove with alcohol is more convenient, less smoky and less harmful, the local people still believe that only using coal stove and grill manually would make the best quality food.

A small kiosk in Lò Đúc (near Trần Xuân Soạn, Hà Nội) has been there for quite a long time but never show that it lost its reputation. There might be fewer customers coming to the kiosk when the weather is hot, but the rest of the time customers are lining up to buy food here.

1. Grilled Pork Side (Thịt ba chỉ nướng)

This dish is one of the typical Vietnamese Street Food, each piece of meat is carefully selected, contain both the lean and fat. We slice the meat, marinate in spices then grill in a hot coal stove. Be careful when grilling, you must remember to turn the meat side constantly until it is cooked. For 2-3 people, depending on how much you can consume, you can order 3-4 plates with a total price (drinks included) within 200,000 VND.

2. Grilled Rolled Beef (Bò cuộn)

This delicious dish is recently introduced by the owner. The first time tasting you might wonder why the beef is crunchy and different from the original grilled rolled beef. The secret is that the vegetable inside the roll and in the middle there are corncobs.

3. Crunchy (Giòn lai rai)

For others, the reason they come here is because of the dish named Crunchy (Giòn lai rai). The dish name is created by the customers. Its main ingredient is the pig or cow’s heart stems marinated with spices.

4. Honey Bread (Bánh mì mật ong)

In the menu, there are 13 grilled Vietnamese Street Food, such as grilled beef, spicy marinated oyster, grilled octopus with pepper, grilled pork side with sour and sweet sauce, etc. Accompanying with these dished is Honey Bread (Bánh mì mật ong) which will definitely make you remember the taste forever.

The only inconvenient thing when eating these grilled Vietnamese Street Food is that your clothes may be smelly for quite a time. However, for the food lovers, being able to enjoy these grilled food, that little “inconvenient” thing is not worth time for second consideration.
